JOB SUMMARY

The Mechanic Team Lead supervises, assigns and schedules work according to load. This position performs skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of school district vehicles, including school buses, vans, trucks, and support vehicles. Responsible for ensuring that repairs and preventative maintenance are completed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Creates documentation and communicates with supervisors on a daily basis. 

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Assign tasks, monitor progress, and support mechanics in troubleshooting complex repairs and inspect completed work for quality.
2.    Support fleet readiness for daily transportation schedules, field trips, special events and 
coordinate with transportation management to schedule repairs and reduce downtime.  
3.    Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner and without supervision. Maintain accurate, up-to-date preventive maintenance records.
4.    Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical, and cooling systems. Maintain accurate and detailed records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED

5.    Ensure shop, equipment, and tools are in safe operating condition. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor. Follow district safety protocols, emergency procedures, and cleanliness of the maintenance facility.
6.    Operates service vehicles to include tire truck, service truck and heavy wrecker as required.  Performs maintenance work on road service calls including general towing, extrication, recoveries, accidents, jump starting batteries, changing flat tires, fuel delivery, and general troubleshooting of disabled vehicles.
7.    Conduct safety inspections and ensure compliance with DOT, OSHA, and state-specific school bus safety standards.
8.    Order parts, manage inventory, and coordinate with vendors for outsourced work.
9.    Perform other job-related duties as assigned, contributing to the department’s mission of delivering safe, student-centered transportation services across HISD.

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or GED
Formal Automotive Training preferred

WORK EXPERIENCE

3 to 5 years 

SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION

SAP, Microsoft Office
Office equipment (e.g., computer, copier), Vehicles (e.g., automobile, truck, tractor, forklift)
Class B CDL, with School Bus & Passenger endorsements, required
A/C Recovery Certification is required within 90 days from time of hire.
Current ASE/TASBT or Manufacturers Master Technician Certification preferred.
Must provide own hand tools.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

Work Leadership.  Regularly provides project management or team leadership to a group of two or more employees but does not have a formal supervisory responsibility.  Leading and directing is restricted to monitoring work and providing guidance on escalated issues.  Most of work time is spent performing many of the same duties they are leading.

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

Work involves the application of moderately complex procedures and tasks that are quite varied. Independent judgment is often required to select and apply the most appropriate of available resources. Ongoing supervision is provided on an "as needed" basis.

BUDGET AUTHORITY

No budget development activity is required.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Decisions are made on both routine and non-routine matters with some latitude, but are still subject to approval. Job is occasionally expected to recommend new solutions to problems and improve existing methods or generate new ideas.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS

Follows rules and procedures.  Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD.  Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS

Information sharing – gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instructions and reporting results.  Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor and co-workers in own and other departments.  Must be able to communicate via email.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS

Takes routine or required customer actions to meet customer needs.  Responds promptly and accurately to customer complains, inquiries and requests for information and coordinates appropriate follow-up.  May handle escalated issues passed on from co-workers or subordinates.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment, which does not subject the employee to any hazardous or unpleasant elements. 
•    Valid Texas driver’s license with applicable insurance coverage. 
•    Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including personal computer and peripherals.
•    Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
•    Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
•    Ability to carry and/or lift up to 15 to 44 pounds.
•    Environment: Prolonged or irregular hours, including some weekends; frequent districtwide travel.
•    Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress, fast-paced.
