JOB SUMMARY

A teacher resident (TR) is a university student completing a year-long clinical teaching experience under the guidance of a highly effective mentor teacher (MT). Throughout the full school year, the resident works full-time alongside the MT, actively engaging in classroom activities from the start of the residency. The TR gradually assumes greater instructional responsibilities while earning a degree through an HISD university partner, preparing for a successful teaching career.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Fulfill all university program requirements, including class attendance, coursework, and clinical placement.
2.     Meet all district expectations as outlined in the Employee Handbook, including the district attendance policies. 
3.    Complete teacher certification requirements within established deadlines.
4.    Participate in district professional development sessions and events.
5.    Collaborate with the mentor teacher (MT) to co-plan and implement lessons using co-teaching models.
6.    Identify and address students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs and barriers to learning.
7.    Maintain high expectations for student behavior and engagement, ensuring accountability.
8.    Foster a classroom culture of respect, enthusiasm, and positive rapport.
9.    Manage student behavior during transitions and unstructured times (e.g., recess, lunch).
10.    Supervise independent work while the MT provides instruction using the co-teach models.
11.    Support the implementation of a rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum that meets the learners’ needs.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED

12.    Plan lessons backward to align activities and assessments with high standards and curriculum goals.
13.    Implement and recommend instructional strategies that promote higher-order thinking and personalized learning.
14.    Implement and recommend assessment practices that accurately measure student progress with mentor teacher guidance and approval.
15.    Deliver targeted instruction using mentor-provided resources and rubrics to support learning for all students.
16.    Supervise student practice, projects, and digital learning activities.
17.    Lead whole-group instruction as appropriate with mentor teacher guidance and approval.
18.     Participate periodically in instructional planning, data analysis, and improvement efforts.
19.     Other duties as assigned.

Approved to begin clinical residency or student teaching according to HISD university partner standards.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice, and training to staff.

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

Work and tasks are often straightforward, routine, structured, and guided by established policies and procedures. Little, if any, independent judgment is required, outside of making basic choices in the selection and application of established methods. The job receives frequent, ongoing supervision.

BUDGET AUTHORITY

No budget development activity is required.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Decisions are made on routine matters affecting few individuals and usually within the confines of the job's own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures, or services.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS

Follow rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS

Basic communication - very little communication required such as receiving basic instructions. Interactions are mostly with customers, their own supervisor, and co-workers in their own department.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS

Follows through with customer inquiries, requests, and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. 
Ability to carry and/or lift less than 15 pounds.
