POSITION SUMMARY
Under the leadership of the Special Education Director, and with support from the Office of Special Education Services, the SOAR Special Education Teacher will perform duties/functions that ensure special education services are provided for students with disabilities in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements for student in TEA approved Nonpublic day and residential programs/ schools.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
- Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students, parents, and nonpublic day/residential staff.
- Acts as liaison between HISD and nonpublic day/ residential staff to ensure effective implementation of instructional and behavioral services for students with disabilities
- Attends Special Education Department Chair meetings
- Collaborates with nonpublic day/ residential staff to utilize results-based accountability and data-driven decision-making processes to assure that students with disabilities are making progress and graduating at a comparable rate as their non-disabled peers
- Follows procedures identified by the Office of Special Education Services to increase district performance levels on State Performance Plan (SPP) and RDA
- Assists with the acquisition, distribution, and tracking of special education instructional materials/resources
- Set up and update ARD Calendar

- Scheduling and Facilitating ARDs
- Provide Dyslexia Services to student who require the services and complete Dyslexia Progress Monitoring in the District IEP System.
- Update Special Education IEP paperwork as required for ARD meetings in the district IEP Management system
- Conduct observations of TEA approved Nonpublic day and residential programs/ schools.
- Update and Upload Reintegration plans into the district's IEP management system
- Administer District Benchmarks aligned with HISD assessment calendar.
- Updating and maintaining student special education eligibility folder in order as required by OSES.
- Other duties as assigned by the Special Education Director
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education
Bachelor’s degree
Must have Texas Teacher certification in Special Education.
Experience
Possess three or more years of exemplary teaching experience in special education with the most recent evaluation indicating performance exceeds expectation
Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and leadership abilities
Demonstrate knowledge of special education federal, state, and local guidelines
Other Requirements
• Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internal and external to the district.
• Ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into focus; judge distance (close and distant); reach with arms extended and use hands to manipulate the keyboard.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, twist, bend, climb, and/or be mobile.
• Ability to travel throughout the district and city by means of private or public transportation. If driving personal (or private) vehicle, must possess a valid driver’s license and appropriate insurance coverage.
