JOB SUMMARY

The Director – Instructional Data Integrations leads the design, maintenance, and performance of integrations between HISD’s student systems and a wide range of instructional, operational, and third-party platforms. This includes transportation systems, learning management systems (LMS), assessment platforms, and instructional applications that rely on accurate and timely student data. The Director ensures that data from the SIS and other core systems flows securely, consistently, and efficiently to instructional stakeholders and partners across the district.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Oversee daily operations for all student data integrations with instructional and operational systems.
2.    Manage a team of senior and mid-level architects responsible for interface design, development, and monitoring.
3.    Collaborate with academic and IT stakeholders to determine integration needs for LMS, testing platforms, and vendor systems.
4.    Ensure accurate and timely delivery of student rosters, course data, grades, and special program flags to internal and external platforms.
5    Design scalable integration frameworks that support both real-time and batch processing.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED

6.    Ensure compliance with FERPA, internal security policies, and district data-sharing agreements.
7.    Monitor data pipelines for errors or delays and implement logging and alerting systems.
8.    Participate in SIS upgrades and transitions by designing future-ready integration points.
9.    Coordinate with the Data Intelligence and Security teams to validate integration accuracy and safeguard student information.
10.    Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related technical field required. Master’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and at least seven (7) years of relevant experience.    

WORK EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 7 years in systems integration or educational data management. At least 2 years leading technical teams or projects in a K–12 or higher education environment.    

SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION

•    Strong understanding of SIS architecture and student data flows
•    Experience with SFTP, APIs, middleware, and automated ETL processes
•    Familiarity with PowerSchool, Clever, ClassLink, or equivalent rostering services
•    Understanding of FERPA, data privacy, and student consent management
•    Strong communication and documentation skills for both technical and non-technical audiences

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

Leads a team of technical staff responsible for daily system operations. Oversees prioritization, performance metrics, and resolution of integration issues.    

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

Makes independent decisions about integration architectures and priorities. Troubleshoots complex, multi-system data flow problems.

BUDGET AUTHORITY

Provides input on platform licensing, integration tools, and third-party services.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Resolves issues involving conflicting data formats, integration failures, and unanticipated vendor changes. Designs forward compatible and maintainable solutions.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS

Impacts the accuracy of instructional resources, testing environments, and student-facing technologies across the district. Delays or errors may disrupt instruction or violate compliance requirements.    

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS

Collaborates with academic teams, data services, SIS administrators, and software vendors to coordinate secure data flow.    

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS

Acts as a key partner to campuses, instructional departments, and external platforms relying on accurate student data feeds.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Office work environment. May require extended hours during integration launches, SIS transitions, or academic year rollovers, hybrid setting available.
