JOB SUMMARY

The Data Science and Analytics Coordinator plays a critical role in advancing HISD’s commitment to data-driven decision-making within the Office of Academics. This position leads the development and implementation of innovative analytical solutions that enhance strategic planning and operational effectiveness across the district. By transforming complex datasets into actionable insights, this role supports HISD’s mission to narrow achievement gaps, drive continuous improvement, and prepare students for a future-ready workforce. The ideal candidate is a high-performing professional who thrives in a culture of excellence, accountability, and impact—bringing expertise in statistical analysis, data visualization, and predictive modeling to shape student success.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

List most important duties first
1.        Leads high-impact data initiatives from concept to execution, ensuring alignment with HISD’s strategic priorities and academic transformation efforts. Defines project objectives, deliverables, and timelines while maintaining clear communication and collaboration with key stakeholders.

2.        Applies advanced statistical techniques and machine learning models to analyze student performance trends, predict academic outcomes, and drive evidence-based decision-making. Uses tools such as Excel, R, Python, and Power BI to deliver insights that directly support HISD’s commitment to high-quality instruction and operational efficiency.

3.        Manages ETL processes to ensure data integrity, accuracy, and accessibility across multiple platforms. Works cross-functionally to integrate structured datasets into analytical tools, empowering district leaders to make informed decisions that enhance student achievement.

4.        Develops dynamic dashboards and visualizations in Power BI that translate complex data into actionable intelligence. Creates engaging, intuitive reports that equip educators, principals, and leadership teams with real-time insights to drive school improvement.

5.        Communicates findings effectively through compelling presentations, written reports, and data storytelling. Supports district-wide knowledge sharing and transparency by documenting methodologies, workflows, and analytical best practices.

6.        Designs and implements surveys and spatial analysis models to uncover geographic and demographic patterns that influence academic success. Leverages tools like Qualtrics and ArcGIS to provide targeted, data-driven recommendations for district-level planning.

7.        Champions a culture of continuous improvement by staying at the forefront of data science innovations and fostering collaborative problem-solving within HISD. Actively contributes to a high-performance environment that supports the district’s vision of excellence in education.

8.        Performs other duties as assigned, supporting HISD’s commitment to operational excellence, student success, and innovative leadership.
 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree

WORK EXPERIENCE

At least 3 years working in the district/central office of a large urban school district

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

Work Leadership. Regularly provides project management or team leadership to a group of two or more employees but does not have formal supervisory responsibility. Leading and directing is restricted to monitoring work and providing guidance on escalated issues. Most of work time is spent performing many of the same duties they are leading.
 

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

Work is substantially complex, varied and regularly requires the selection and application of technical and detailed guidelines. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate methods as well as interpret precedent. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the department. Supervision received typically consists of providing direction on the more complex projects and new job duties and priorities.

Decisions are made with greater freedom and discretion, including recommendations that are subject to approval on matters that may affect multiple departments across HISD. Job is frequently expected to recommend new solutions to problems, to improve existing methods/procedures/services and generate new ideas. May also review decisions made by other individuals on more routine matters.

Decisions have considerable impact to multiple divisions or the organization causing risks or improvements to relationships, significant efficiencies, or delays in operations, and/or significant financial gains or expenses.
