JOB SUMMARY
The Communications Coordinator-1 plays a vital role in supporting the Communications Department’s efforts to inform and engage key audiences. This position requires excellent writing skills, experience in social media strategy and content creation, and a keen understanding of effective communication tactics. A combination of strategic thinking and the ability to drive messaging is essential. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for supporting departmental goals by developing and implementing communication strategies, creating compelling content for various platforms, and coordinating messaging across multiple channels, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure clear, consistent, and impactful messaging that aligns with HISD’s mission and priorities.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Develop high-quality written and digital content for various communication channels, including emails, social media, websites, and articles, ensuring consistency in tone, style, and messaging.
2. Plan, create, and schedule engaging content for HISD’s social media platforms and monitor audience engagement.
3. Work with communications team and internal departments to coordinate coverage and highlight District achievements on HISD platforms.
4. Assist in executing District-wide communication plans that align with HISD’s mission and priorities, ensuring effective outreach to key audiences.
5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to ensure alignment and effective communication of coordinated efforts.

6. Coordinates with team members to develop and deliver accessible, timely, relevant, educational, and engaging messaging and materials in all forms – internal and external, written and oral, printed and digital collateral, social media and website, and general outreach.
7. Collaborate with designers and multimedia specialists to create visually compelling content, including graphics, videos, and infographics for digital platforms.
8. Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, promoting teamwork, open communication, and professional growth.
9. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree
WORK EXPERIENCE
At least 3 years working in communications or related role.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
Work Leadership. Provides support and guidance to team members as needed but does not have formal supervisory or project management responsibilities. May assist in coordinating tasks, ensuring deadlines are met, and offering input on best practices. The majority of work time is spent performing individual responsibilities and working collaboratively.
WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT
Work is substantially complex, varied, and regularly requires the selection and application of technical and detailed guidelines. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate methods as well as interpret precedent. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the department. Supervision received typically consists of providing direction on the more complex projects and new job duties and priorities.

Compiles and organizes data and figures.

Decisions are made on both routine and non-routine matters with some latitude but are still subject to approval. Job is occasionally expected to recommend new solutions to problems and improve existing methods or generate new ideas.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment but may include campus visits and local travel.
Ability to carry and/or lift less than 25 pounds.
