JOB SUMMARY
The Associate Architect – Enterprise Innovation Lab supports the development, testing, and maintenance of custom software solutions and integrations that extend Houston ISD’s enterprise platforms. This entry-to-mid level role works under the guidance of senior architects to build user-friendly tools, automate workflows, and deliver secure and reliable digital services across business functions. The Associate Architect gains exposure to enterprise architecture, rapid development techniques, and the district’s innovation processes.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assist in the design and development of custom applications and system integrations.
2. Build and test forms, workflows, and automations using low-code tools or web development frameworks.
3. Write clean, modular, and well-documented code to support enterprise use cases.
4. Support testing, bug tracking, and resolution across new or updated tools.
5 Maintain version control and assist with deployment planning and user training.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED
6. Collaborate with technical leads to review solutions for usability, performance, and security.
7. Document user stories, technical specifications, and system dependencies.
8. Work closely with end users and business analysts to translate ideas into prototypes.
9. Participate in innovation sprints, labs, and process improvement events.
10. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field preferred. Candidates pursuing a degree with relevant experience may be considered.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Minimum of 2 years in application development, scripting, or systems integration. Internships, freelance work, or academic projects will be considered with strong portfolios.
SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION
• Exposure to development platforms such as Power Platform, .NET, JavaScript, or Python
• Understanding of APIs, data structures, and user interface design principles
• Familiarity with software development lifecycle, testing, and agile practices
• Strong desire to learn new platforms, tools, and techniques
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to follow technical instructions and work collaboratively in a team environment
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
No formal supervisory responsibilities. Works under the direction of senior team members and technical leads.

Performs standard development tasks with clear guidance. Uses independent judgment to manage time and troubleshoot basic issues.

Resolves basic coding, testing, or configuration issues. Escalates more complex challenges appropriately.

Supports the success of enterprise tools and custom services. Errors may delay deliverables or impact user experience but are typically caught in review.

Communicates regularly with technical mentors and project team members. Participates in design discussions and end-user feedback loops.

Engages end users during testing or feedback sessions. Helps ensure tools meet expectations and function as intended.
