JOB SUMMARY
The Architect – Data Management & Security Operations designs and supports secure data pipelines, access controls, and metadata structures across Houston ISD’s enterprise data systems. Reporting to the Director, this role helps ensure HISD maintains a high standard of data security, consistency, and availability across SIS, ERP, Microsoft Fabric, and Power BI environments. The Architect works closely with engineers, data analysts, and IT security staff to implement access policies and improve data governance infrastructure.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
2. Support the configuration and monitoring of role-based access and group policies across data platforms.
3. Collaborate with engineers and data teams to enforce governance policies and ensure data traceability.
4. Implement metadata tagging, schema standardization, and lineage tracking.
5 Monitor and document data refresh schedules, audit trails, and system access events.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED
6. Assist in risk assessments and internal audit preparation for data security and governance.
7. Contribute to documentation for data integration, access control, and compliance procedures.
8. Support directory service integration with Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and third-party apps.
9. Respond to escalations related to data access issues, configuration problems, or policy exceptions.
10. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in information systems, cybersecurity, data management, or related field, or equivalent work experience required.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Minimum of 4–5 years in enterprise data engineering, access control, or integration architecture. Experience with educational systems is preferred.
SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and Azure AD security models
• Familiarity with SIS and ERP data access patterns
• Strong SQL, documentation, and data mapping skills
• Understanding of FERPA and K–12 data privacy requirements
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
Works independently under the guidance of the Senior Architect and Director. May lead technical implementation workstreams.
WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT
Manages moderately complex access configurations and integration efforts. Applies sound judgment in balancing access and control.
BUDGET AUTHORITY
None. May advise on tools and services to improve access management workflows.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Troubleshoots permission issues, data security exceptions, and metadata inconsistencies.
IMPACT OF DECISIONS
Ensures data users across the district have appropriate access and protections. Errors could result in data exposure or audit findings.
COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS
Collaborates with engineers, architects, and system administrators. Provides support and clarity for policy implementation.
CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS
Enables safe, governed access to student and business data. Supports data consumers with technical accuracy and security.
WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Office setting. May require extended hours during upgrades or audits, hybrid setting available.
