JOB SUMMARY
The Agriculture Systems Summer Day Camp Counselor supports the supervision, instruction, and engagement of middle school students participating in a six-week agriculture and food systems summer camp. Counselors assist with daily activities, field experiences, service learning, and hands-on projects designed to expose students to food, agriculture, sustainability, and career pathways.
Counselors work under the direction of Food & Agriculture Literacy staff and Lead Counselors to ensure a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Supervise and support students during daily camp activities and transitions.
2. Assist with the implementation of agriculture, food systems, and sustainability learning activities.
3. Support student participation in seed-to-plate projects and indoor growing activities.
4. Assist with STEM challenges, cooking competitions, and team-based learning activities.
5. Support field trips, service-learning projects, and guest speaker sessions.
6. Supervise students during farm visits and service projects at Mykawa Farm.
7. Maintain a safe and positive learning environment for all students.
8. Encourage teamwork, collaboration, and respectful behavior among campers.
9. Assist with the preparation, setup, and cleanup of materials and learning spaces.
10 Support culturally responsive and inclusive learning practices.

11 Communicate student needs or concerns to Lead Counselors or FAL staff.
12 Assist with the preparation, setup, and cleanup of instructional materials and activities.
13 Support college and career exploration activities related to food and agriculture.
14 Model positive behavior and professionalism for students.
15 Contribute to a positive camp experience and successful program completion.
16 Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
Basic Reading and Writing High School Diploma or GED Associate degree or 60 hours

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice, and training to staff.
WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT
Work and tasks are often straightforward, routine, structured, and guided by established policies and procedures. Little, if any, independent judgment is required, outside of making basic choices in the selection and application of established methods. The job receives frequent, ongoing supervision.
BUDGET AUTHORITY
No budget development activity is required.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Decisions are made on routine matters affecting a few individuals and usually within the confines of the job's own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures, or services.
IMPACT OF DECISIONS
Follow rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact on HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.
COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS
Basic communication: very little is required, such as receiving basic instructions. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor, and co-workers in own department.
CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS
Follows through with customer inquiries, requests, and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to the appropriate level for resolution.
WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment, which does not subject the employee to any hazardous or unpleasant elements.
Work involves some exposure to a moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions.
