JOB SUMMARY

The DDC Controls Technician is responsible for responding to all BAS alarms as they occur and taking the appropriate action to resolve while minimizing potential damage to mechanical equipment. The DDC Controls Technician must also be able to do the following tasks under limited supervision: operate, maintain, and service HVAC cooling systems and related equipment.
 

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Repair and maintain Building Automation Systems (BAS) and heating, ventilation, & air conditioning (HVAC) controls.
  • Perform maintenance and precise calibration of pneumatic and direct digital control devices.
  • Set schedules and make adjustments to set points for the BAS. Assist field technicians troubleshoot equipment.
  • Make minor adjustments to BAS as required.
  • Install and/or modify device configurations on BAS network as directed by supervisor.
  • Must be able to service special electrical controls, gauges and panels for all equipment.
     

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED

  • Must be able to service and change out motors, fans, exhausts and vent systems.
  • Must be able to diagnose problems and repair equipment valves, chillers, boilers, traps, exchanger, radiators, regulators, pumps and pipes.
  • Must be able to repair and calibrate pneumatic and electric controls, variable frequency drives, connecting pipes, valves, dampers, actuators, air compressors and refrigeration dryers.
  • Must be able to perform preventative maintenance on equipment and maintain inventory of equipment and supplies
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

High School Diploma/GED, Vocational/ Technical Certificate, Associate’s Degree or 48 hours of college
 

WORK EXPERIENCE

1 to 3 years mechanical experience and 5 to 6 years controls experience
Five (5) years of experience working with Building Automation Systems controls. 
Experience in troubleshooting communication, software, and hardware issues for low voltage control systems.
Mechanical HVAC experience is helpful.
 

SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION

Trained in the use of Building Automation Systems software. 
Ability to use various types of mechanical and electrical test instruments. 
 

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory experience.
 

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

Work involves the application of moderately complex procedures and tasks that are quite varied. Independent judgment is often required to select and apply the most appropriate of available resources. Ongoing supervision is provided on an "as needed" basis.
 

BUDGET AUTHORITY

No budget development activity is required.
 

PROBLEM SOLVING

Decisions are made on both routine and non-routine matters with some latitude, but are still subject to approval. Job is occasionally expected to recommend new solutions to problems and improve existing methods or generate new ideas.
 

IMPACT OF DECISIONS

Follows rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.
 

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS

Information sharing - gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instructions and reporting results. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor and coworkers in own and other departments.
 

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS

Follows through with customer inquiries, requests and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution.
 

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noise, chemicals, etc.
Ability to carry and/or lift 45 pounds or more.
